Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the meaning of work experiences among older adults across their lifespan developments. Participants were 11 adults aged more than 65 years who acquired work experiences after retirement. In-depth interviews were conducted 2 to 4 times using the Schutze`s narrative interview method. Data collected from the initial questionnaires and in-depth interviews between the autumn of 2013 and the winter of 2014 were transcribed verbatim, classified based on Schutze`s case analysis of biographical process structure by case, and then analyzed by the life narrative approach of Lieblish et al. We found that the work life course of older adults could be divided into the career decision period, the entry to jobs periods, the career consolidating period, the golden days in the working life, the retirement period, and the work period in later life. We also found that the meaning of work differ across the span of development. In conclusion, we imply that the work trajectory, which has been simply characterized in terms of three stages(preparation for work, work, and retirement) in earlier studies, expands to working life in later life after retirement.
